Causes and Symptoms

Dry eyes are most commonly found in women over 35 and are often the result of hormonal changes, pregnancy, menopause, and autoimmune diseases like arthritis and lupus. But it can also be caused by medical conditions such as diabetes, blocked tear ducts, and certain medications. In addition, contact wearers are susceptible to Dry Eye Disease, and environmental factors, such as smoking and prolonged computer use, can also play a role.

The most frequent symptoms of dry eyes include blurriness, red or burning vision, a gritty feeling in the eyes, unusual tear production, light sensitivity, and contact lens discomfort. Left untreated, it can damage the eye’s delicate tissues and disrupt the cornea, leading to impaired vision. Mid-Atlantic Eyecare is committed to preventing the lasting impacts of this disease through proper diagnosis and treatment.

Lipiflow Dry Eye Treatment

Who doesn’t love the fresh air and breezy sunny weather? If you have a condition known as dry eye, which can be exacerbated by the itching and tearing brought on by seasonal allergies.

What many longtime dry eye sufferers may not realize is that it’s often caused by Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), which occurs when the tiny Meibomian glands in eyelids become stopped up and unable to protect the tear film—a thin layer of fluid that covers the outer surface of the eye.

While MGD has traditionally been hard to treat, there’s a breakthrough therapy that’s making it far simpler to do: the LipiFlow® Thermal Pulsation System, which uses a cutting-edge device to heat up and massage away the blockage in just 12 minutes, right in your eye doctor’s office.

Diagnosis and Treatment

While the causes are many, the diagnosis is straightforward. We can detect Dry Eye Disease through a simple eye exam or a dye test. The Schirmer test, which measures tear volume in the eye, can also be used.

Heading off the damaging effects of having dry eyes is easily achieved. We commonly use artificial tears and gels.  We’ll place a slow-release insert filled with medicine under the lower lid for more severe cases. This insert gradually releases moisture for much-needed relief. An ointment at bedtime may be required, as well.
