Visit Our Cataract Center

Cataract patients now have the option to have their vision corrected to allow them to see at both near and far distances after cataract surgery! These lens implants provide significantly reduced dependence on glasses for all tasks of daily living, providing a range of focus that laser vision correction cannot achieve. Individuals with visual impairment suffering from cataracts previously had only a mono-focal lens implant option after surgery.

Cataract Surgery and Astigmatism Reduction

What is astigmatism?

Besides nearsightedness and farsightedness, the third major category of refractive error is called astigmatism. This blur results from a cornea that is not perfectly spherical in shape, but rather football shaped.

Procedures such as Lasik or Limbal Relaxing Incisions can surgically reduce astigmatism by re-shaping the oblong curvature of the cornea. An astigmatism correcting IOL known as the Toric IOL can be implanted at the time of cataract surgery to reduce or eliminate astigmatism usually requiring only drug store reading glasses for near tasks after surgery.

Is the Advanced Technology IOL implantation covered by insurance?

For our patients with cataracts, insurance will generally cover the cataract part of the procedure with a basic monofocal implant less any copays and deductibles. The elective Advanced Technology IOL upgrade will be patient’s financial responsibility.

Patients who seek the Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) procedure but have no cataract will be fully financially responsible as it is considered cosmetic for non-cataract patients.
